Journey of A Thousand Boats is a wall piece that tells a story of my family’s flight as refugees from Vietnam. Each hollow form represents a family and their journey and each one has a story to tell.
The round black surface is 10mm thick Perspex that had been polished with very fine pumice and water to create a satin finish. This represents the South China Seas and where life and death relies on luck and chance.
On three of the vessels, I have etched some old family photographs- one of mum and dad when they were dating; one of mum standing on a staircase and a portrait of mum, my two brothers and I when we were children. This wall piece is like a family tree for my niece and nephew to appreciate in times to come and a reminder not to lose sight of their heritage.
